How the check works

The factors that move CTR

Click-through rate is decided in half a second by a handful of visual signals: contrast against the feed, a readable promise, an expressive face at the right size. Each one is measured, not guessed.

Honest by design

No tool can know your real CTR before viewers see the video — anyone claiming to predict it is guessing. What can be checked is whether the measurable drivers of CTR are in their winning ranges. That's what this does.

A score with fixes attached

The 0-100 score comes with a prioritized list: which factor is furthest from its range, what the measured value is, and what to change. Re-check after editing and watch it move.

CTR is a chain, and the thumbnail is the first link

Impressions click-through rate decides how far YouTube pushes a video: high CTR earns more impressions, low CTR quietly buries it. And in the feed, the thumbnail does the heavy lifting — viewers react to the image in about half a second, before the title gets read. A video that never earns the click never gets the chance to prove its watch time.

The factors that decide that half-second are more measurable than most creators think. Contrast determines whether the image pops or melts into the feed. Brightness in the 40-75% band survives both light and dark mode. Three or four big words beat a sentence nobody can read at 168 pixels wide. An expressive face at 8%+ of the frame gives viewers an emotion to react to. Clutter under control means there's one subject to lock onto. This checker measures each against its winning range and ranks the fixes by impact.

What it deliberately doesn't do is invent a fake "predicted CTR percentage" — no tool outside YouTube can know that number. Check the factors here, publish, then read your real CTR in Studio after a couple of days. For the full rulebook behind each factor, see the thumbnail checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tool really predict my thumbnail's CTR?

No — and it's worth being direct about that. Real CTR depends on your topic, audience, title and where YouTube shows the video, and it only exists after impressions happen. What a checker can honestly do is measure the visual factors that consistently drive clicks — contrast, brightness, text readability at feed size, face presence and size, clutter — and tell you which are off. That's what this score is.

What's a good CTR on YouTube?

YouTube's own guidance: half of all channels sit between roughly 2% and 10% impressions click-through rate. New-video spikes, homepage placement and niche all swing it, so compare a video against your channel's own average rather than a universal number.

Which thumbnail factors actually affect CTR?

The consistently measurable ones: enough contrast to pop against light and dark feeds, brightness in the 40-75% band, three-to-four readable words maximum, a face large enough to read emotion (roughly 8%+ of the frame when you use one), and low visual clutter so there's one clear subject. This checker measures every one of them.

Where do I see the real CTR of a published video?

YouTube Studio → Analytics → Reach → 'Impressions click-through rate'. Check it 48-72 hours after publishing once impressions stabilize. If the real number disappoints, run the thumbnail through this checker to find which factor is dragging.

Can I check a competitor's thumbnail?

Yes — paste the video's link and the checker fetches the thumbnail automatically. Scoring the videos that outrank you is the fastest way to see what their packaging does that yours doesn't.

Is it free and private?

Completely free, no account, and the analysis runs in your browser — the image is never uploaded.
