Why WebP beats JPEG on the same image

JPEG processes the image in fixed 8×8 blocks and encodes each largely on its own. WebP predicts each block from the pixels already decoded around it and stores only the error — a technique taken from video compression, where predicting the next frame from the last is the entire game. It also uses arithmetic-style entropy coding that packs the result more tightly than JPEG's Huffman tables. Both improvements are structural, which is why the saving holds across most photographic content rather than depending on a lucky image.

You're re-encoding, so start from the best original

Converting JPG to WebP decodes a lossy image and re-encodes it lossily. At sensible quality settings that's invisible, but the artefacts already in the JPEG are now being compressed again, which compounds them slightly. If you still have the original camera file or the export from your editor, convert from that instead. If the JPEG is all you have, use a high quality setting and convert once rather than experimenting repeatedly on the output.

Where JPG is still the right answer
