Why so many apps still reject WebP
Browsers adopted WebP quickly because Google could ship decoder support directly. Desktop software moved far slower — image editors, office suites, and the long tail of internal business tools all had to add it deliberately, and many older versions never did. Print workflows are the most conservative of all, since they're built around colour-managed formats with decades of tooling behind them. So while WebP is entirely safe for the web, PNG remains the safe answer for anything leaving it.
What the conversion does and doesn't fix
The PNG will be a perfect copy of the WebP's pixels — but if that WebP was saved lossily, its artefacts are already baked in and get preserved exactly. Converting doesn't clean up a compressed image, it just relocates it to a format more things can open. Expect the PNG to be considerably larger, too: WebP compresses better than PNG in both modes, so undoing that necessarily costs file size.
PNG or JPG as the target?
Choose PNG when the image has transparency, contains text or line art, or needs to stay lossless for editing. Choose JPG when it's a photograph with no transparency and you care about file size — the PNG of a photo can easily be five times larger than the equivalent JPG for no visible benefit.

Why convert WebP to PNG?

Is the PNG lossless?
The conversion is — every pixel from the WebP is stored exactly. But it can't recover detail that lossy WebP compression already discarded; those artefacts are preserved rather than removed.
Will the PNG be bigger?
Yes, usually noticeably. WebP compresses better than PNG in both lossy and lossless modes, so converting back inevitably costs file size. That's the price of universal compatibility.
Does transparency survive?
Completely. Both formats support an 8-bit alpha channel, so cut-outs, soft shadows and anti-aliased edges convert without fringing.
Why won't my computer open a WebP file?
Because the application predates WebP support or never added it — common with older Photoshop versions, some Office builds and various internal tools. Converting to PNG is the quickest fix.
