How it works

Three formats cover almost everything on the web, and each is good at something the others aren't. PNG is lossless with transparency, which makes it right for graphics and wrong for photographs. JPG is lossy and universally accepted, which makes it right for photos and wrong for text. WebP does both jobs better than either but isn't accepted quite everywhere yet. Choosing the right target format

Ask two questions. Does it need transparency? If yes, PNG or WebP — JPG has no alpha channel and never will. Is it a photograph or a graphic? Photographs compress enormously well as JPG or WebP and badly as PNG; graphics, screenshots and anything with text are the reverse, because lossy compression puts visible halos around hard edges. WebP is the modern default for anything web-facing: smaller than JPG on photos, smaller than PNG on graphics, and it supports transparency in both modes.

Conversion can't recover what's already lost

Converting a JPEG to PNG produces a lossless copy of a lossy image — the compression artefacts are baked into the pixels and are now stored perfectly. The file usually gets bigger while looking exactly the same. That's still a reasonable thing to do before editing, since it stops further generation loss, but it isn't a quality upgrade. Nothing recovers detail a lossy save discarded.

Compatibility, briefly

JPG and PNG are accepted essentially everywhere, including decades-old software. WebP is supported by every current browser and by modern design tools, but still gets rejected by some upload forms, older applications and certain print workflows. Use WebP for anything you control, and convert to JPG or PNG when handing a file to something you don't.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?

WebP for anything on the web — smallest at matching quality, with transparency. PNG when you need lossless output or an alpha channel and the destination won't take WebP. JPG when compatibility matters most and the image is photographic.

Does converting lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes lossily, though above 80 percent quality the difference is invisible on photographs. Converting between lossy formats does compound artefacts slightly, so start from the best original you have.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP keep it. JPG can't store it at all, so transparent areas are flattened onto white — deliberately, because leaving it undefined produces black backgrounds in some decoders.

Can I convert HEIC, AVIF or SVG?

Not currently. The tool handles PNG, JPG and WebP, which covers the overwhelming majority of conversions. SVG is a fundamentally different thing — vector instructions rather than a pixel grid — so it needs rendering, not converting.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in the mobile browser the same way it runs on desktop, and you can pick images straight from your camera roll.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Every conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
