How it works

WebP is the format the web settled on, and for good reason: it's smaller than JPEG on photographs, smaller than PNG on graphics, and it's the only one of the three that handles both lossy compression and transparency at the same time. Why WebP wins in both modes

Its lossy mode borrows block prediction from video compression, encoding each region as a difference from what's already been decoded rather than in isolation — a structural improvement over JPEG's independent 8×8 blocks. Its lossless mode uses image-specific prediction and colour transforms rather than PNG's general-purpose DEFLATE. So it beats JPEG on photographs and PNG on graphics, using two quite different techniques, and it can attach an alpha channel to either.

What this does for page speed

Largest Contentful Paint — how long until the biggest visible element finishes loading — is a Core Web Vitals metric Google uses in ranking, and on most pages that element is an image. Cutting image weight by half moves LCP directly, particularly on mobile connections. It's rare to find a change this mechanical with this much effect: no redesign, no code restructuring, just smaller files.

The remaining caveats

Browser support is universal and has been for years, so the web itself is a solved problem. What still trips people up is everything outside it: some upload forms validate extensions strictly, older desktop software may not open WebP, email client support is inconsistent, and print workflows generally want TIFF or high-quality JPEG. Use WebP for what you publish; convert to JPG or PNG when handing files to something you don't control.

Why use WebP?

Does WebP work everywhere?

In browsers, yes — Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge have supported it for years. Outside the browser it's less certain: some older applications, upload forms and print workflows still expect PNG or JPG.

Lossy or lossless WebP?

Lossy for photographs, where discarded detail is imperceptible and the savings are large. Lossless for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with text, where hard edges are exactly what lossy compression damages first.

How much smaller will my images be?

Roughly 25 to 35 percent versus JPEG for photographs, and 70 to 90 percent versus PNG for images with photographic content. Lossless WebP still beats PNG by around 20 to 30 percent.

Will switching to WebP improve my SEO?

Indirectly. The format isn't a ranking factor, but the page speed it buys you is — Largest Contentful Paint is part of Core Web Vitals, and images are usually what determines it.
