How WebP beats PNG at its own job

PNG relies on DEFLATE, a general-purpose lossless algorithm from the early nineties that wasn't designed for images specifically. WebP's lossless mode uses image-aware techniques: it predicts each pixel from its neighbours and stores only the difference, applies colour transforms that decorrelate the channels, and keeps a cache of recently-used colours. All of that is tuned for exactly the patterns images contain. The result is 20 to 30 percent smaller than PNG with pixel-identical output. Switch to lossy mode on photographic content and the gap widens enormously.

This is the combination PNG can't offer at all, and it's the biggest practical win. A product shot on a transparent background, or an illustration with a soft drop shadow, can be stored lossily — dropping the photographic detail nobody perceives — while keeping the alpha channel perfectly crisp. That's how a 2 MB PNG becomes a 150 KB WebP that looks the same on the page. For flat graphics, logos and screenshots, stay lossless: their hard edges are what lossy compression handles worst.

Browser support is a solved problem

Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge have all supported WebP for years, on desktop and mobile. It is no longer a format that needs a fallback for the web. The remaining gaps are outside the browser: some older desktop applications, a few upload forms, and certain print workflows still expect PNG or JPG.
